Peeking into the Black Box: how journalists can investigate algorithms

Automated decision making (ADM) systems, controlled by algorithms, determine whether we get a mortgage, a visa or are security-checked at airports. They determine which of our friends' posts we see on Facebook and what our Google search results look like. It's imperative for journalists to take greater responsibility in holding these systems accountable.

But how can we do it? We'll be discussing the issue with two reporters who broke the most important stories in this field in recent years, ProPublica's Julia Angwin and Jeff Larson.
